HMI Backups Insufficient for Engineering Modifications
❌ MYTH | If you have an HMI backup, you no longer need the source project
The operator panel has failed. You have a backup — problem solved?
It may be enough to restore operation on a compatible device. But if you need to modify a screen, add a parameter or migrate to another model, that backup may have limitations.
Restoring operation and editing a project are different tasks.
🔹 A backup may allow you to restore the panel without providing an editable project.
🔹 The source project is needed to make changes in the engineering software.
🔹 Recovery and migration options depend on the manufacturer, HMI model, software and saved file format.
At equipment handover, check more than the existence of a folder named “Backup”. Does it contain the current source project? Which software version opens it? Are the required passwords and libraries available?
The key question: will these files let you do what you need to do?
Planning an HMI replacement or a control system upgrade? EnergoStar specialists can help select a solution based on your existing equipment and available project documentation.
