Navigate Drive Discontinuation: Spare Parts and Modernization

“If it fails, we’ll buy the same one.” What if it’s no longer in regular sale?

A production line can run for decades. During that time, several generations of PLCs, operator panels and drives may come and go.

A concrete example is Siemens SIMATIC S7-300 and ET 200M. These families entered the PM410 discontinuation stage on 1 October 2025. Spare-part availability is planned until 1 October 2033; individual component status should be checked by part number.

This does not mean a working system needs immediate replacement. But “we’ll order an identical module” is now an assumption worth checking.

Plant operators have three possible approaches:

🔹 Maintain the existing system — identify critical components and secure compatible spares.

🔹 Upgrade in stages — verify how new equipment will work with the installed system.

🔹 Plan a modernization project — schedule software migration, wiring changes and testing.

The choice depends on equipment condition, component availability and how much downtime the plant can accommodate.

The key question: if this module fails tomorrow, do we have a verified recovery plan?
